Traditional Youth Theatre Classes

Offered 2 times per year; enrollment is required separately for each semester.

Our traditional youth theatre classes follow our tried-and-true weekly class structure that culminates in a large-scale production at the end of the class period. Our traditional classes are offered TWO TIMES A YEAR – one fall program and one spring program. Students may participate in one or both sessions, but enrollment for each is separate.

For Fall 2022, traditional youth theatre students will produce When Christmas Comes to TOWN.  Students meet one time a week with their class beginning the week of August 29. Students come together with their casts for group rehearsals beginning November 11 up until the performances which are Dec. 3 &4 (Monday/Tuesday classes) and Dec. 10 & 11 (Wednesday/Thursday classes). There are no classes the week of Thanksgiving.

For Spring 2023, traditional youth theatre students will produce The Little Mermaid Jr.  Students meet one time a week with their class beginning the week of January 2. Students come together with their casts for group rehearsals beginning March 11 up until the performances which are March 31-April 2 (Monday/Tuesday classes 31st and 1st; Wednesday/Thursday classes 1st and 2nd).

During the group rehearsal time, students can expect a rehearsal schedule that mirrors that of a show as compared to the regular class time. Rehearsals will generally be held within the 5:00 PM/5:30 PM time frame and will conclude no later than 7:00 PM/7:30 PM. Younger students are often dismissed earlier. Upon enrollment, you will choose a class day that corresponds with your grade level. Classes will run weekdays from 5:30 PM-7:00 PM. See matrix on our website for options.

Group Voice (add on)

Enrollment is required separately for each semester.
Students enrolled in our Traditional Youth Theatre Classes are eligible to sign up for group voice. Group voice runs from 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM and is on the same day as your traditional class. For Fall, group voice follows the schedule of our traditional offerings with weekly lessons running the weeks of August 39 through November 11.

Tap Options

This is an annual enrollment. Tap classes are offered through the SC Music and Dance Academy. All tap registration/payment is done through SCMADA. Please note that start and ending dates may vary. We do work to coordinate.

Town Tweens

Annual commitment (August 30 through April)
Class meets Tuesdays from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM

Tweens may do the Group Tap add on if they would like. Tweens may also take a Traditional Youth Theatre Class if they choose. Interested parents should contact Shannon Scruggs for payment details.

Town Tweens are a group of students in 4th to 8th grade that meet weekly. The purpose of the Tweens is to continue to develop theatrical and musical theatre skills. Tweens are not in the casts of the traditional youth theatre programs but have other performance opportunities which may be at Town Theatre or other venues. Students can participate in both Tweens and the traditional program as there is no overlap, however, the time commitment of doing both should be taken into consideration. In general, students are permitted to continue in the Tween program from year to year without re-auditioning. Town Tweens is a YEAR LONG commitment and is by audition or invitation only.

Town Thespians

Annual commitment (September through April)
Class meets Tuesdays from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM

The Town Thespians is a year-long troupe that will work specifically on the craft of acting. Students should be in at least 7th grade to participate OR have the recommendation of the instructor. Students will learn various techniques from numerous acting methods; exercises to hone their craft; work on character development by determining a character’s history and objectives; collaborate in an ensemble and learning to give and receive from their fellow actors onstage.

Town Teen Troupe (T3)

Annual commitment (September through April)
Class meets Sundays from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM (with some small groups being held until 9:00 PM on a periodic basis)

T3’s mission is to provide musical theatre/performing arts development and performance opportunities for older youth at Town Theatre – typically those in 9th through 12th grades. Students are introduced to multiple faculty members and offered a variety of performance experiences that are unique. T3 focuses both on ensemble work AND individual progress for each student. T3 is a year-long commitment. Most classes are held at Town Theatre though some may be moved to alternative locations to accommodate the theatre’s schedule. In general, students are permitted to continue in the T3 program from year to year without re-auditioning. T3 a YEAR LONG commitment and is by audition or invitation only. T3 is led by David LaTorre, Amanda Hines and Joy Alexander.

Private Acting or Voice Lessons

Private voice lessons, as well as private acting lessons, are also offered. Students may enroll for either a 10-pack of 30-minute sessions OR a 10-pack of 45-minute lessons. Upon enrollment, the student and selected teacher will determine a weekly meeting time for the duration of the pack of lessons. Students will be expected to meet weekly, though some exceptions may be made. Most private voice lessons are taught by Katie Gatch. If Ms. Gatch’s schedule fills, another instructor may be engaged.
